Helping Children and Teens Heal Through Play.
When a child is struggling, they don’t always have the words for it…and being told to “use your words” only goes so far. At Lyons Center, we believe play is more than just fun. It’s how children communicate. Play therapy gives children and adolescents a safe, supportive space to express what they’re thinking and feeling when words aren’t enough.
What is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate approach that uses toys, games, art, and imaginative play to help young people explore emotions, build coping skills, and work through challenges. Just as adults use talk therapy, play gives kids and teens a natural, safe outlet to process their inner world.
Who It’s For:
Play Therapy can help children and teens who are experiencing:
Anxiety, fear, or phobias
Grief or loss
Family transitions (divorce, separation, blending families)
Behavioral concerns or emotional outbursts
Trauma or abuse
Peer or social difficulties
Difficulty adjusting to change or new environments

What to Expect as a Parent or Caregiver
You play a crucial role in the process. While most sessions take place one-on-one between your child and the therapist, we provide regular check-ins to keep you informed and involved. We work as a team to support your child’s emotional growth both in and out of the therapy room.
Meet our Play Therapist
Mariah Driggers, LMFT, is trained in play therapy and specializes in helping children feel seen, safe, and supported. With a warm, relational, and trauma-informed approach, Mariah meets each client where they are and helps them build tools for lasting emotional resilience.
How Will I Know if it’s Working if My Child is “Just Playing?”
The play IS the work; it’s how children process and build skills. Through the regular check-ins, we’ll talk with you about what we’re seeing and the progress your child is making, in plain terms.
Do I Stay in the Room During Sessions?
Usually sessions are one-on-one with your child and the therapist, which helps them feel free to open up. We keep you involved through scheduled check-ins so you are never in the dark about how things are going.
At Lyons Center, We Offer Play Therapy to Clients Ages 5 and Up.
